When Covid-19 hit and CCAs throughout Singapore were suspended or restricted…
I really wanted to present meaningful and enriching activities for the students other than the usual academic workload that they had.

If I were to share a few key points from my E-CCA, it would be…
For coaches to really angle their approach from the standpoint of character development and life skills, not purely on technical or tactical skills. As coaches, we need to believe that the greatest takeaway a child can have from our involvement with them is not their skill, rather, it is how their character develops as they become someone who betters society.
Doing something is better than nothing at all. While it is true that no one can predict or expect the students to greatly benefit from the sessions, if we consider the situation as a baseline of 0 now, we should lift that baseline up as best as we can. We should not accept status quo and be alright with students coming out of the COVID-19 situation without any e-CCA at all.
I do not quite agree with the phrase "social distancing". Standing one metre apart from each other is technically "physical distancing", not "social distancing". Students all the more need to remain socially connected during this difficult time. We need to realize the opportunity here. The students are not completely isolated as many are still meeting online. We need to be mindful that as growing individuals, there is a need for them to be meaningfully engaged and we can still play our part as coaches to engage them socially through various E-platforms.
I saw a quote recently that explains how a teacher who doesn't learn is a dangerous one. I believe this also applies to coaches. If you as a coach do not pursue continuous learning, you are placed in a precarious position for both you and your students. While challenges during this period are plentiful and not easy to circumnavigate, they are still very possible to overcome. Be open to apply for courses, ask peers, friends, teachers or even your own students if you need advice. Those who are interested can also link up with me as I, together with a group of like- minded friends, have created a set of resources for sharing on E-CCA matters.
